The Festival Of The Maples Celebrates 32 Years!

Hard to believe the Festival of the Maples has been in existence for 32 years, celebrating the arrival of Spring and the sweetness of Maple Syrup.

This year’s celebration was an exceptional event with fantastic entertainment and tonnes of fun for Festival goers of all ages.  The weather was perfectly sunny and warm during Festival hours and downtown Perth was packed!

We would like to once again thank our many sponsors who help make this event possible.  As well, thank you to all the volunteers who assist with the Festival and make the Festival a reality and such a fantastic event!

A big, huge, GINORMOUS thank you to the Festival of the Maples organizing committee for all of their hard work in making the Festival a reality.

Perth – More Than Just a Pretty Face

Perth has recently been the centre of attention in two periodicals; Edifice Magazine and due East.

In the spring edition of due East, Barbara Bottriell, a writer from Stittsville gave the Town of Perth a glowing review, one that would entice anyone to visit.  This absolutely beautiful article was distributed in The Citizen in March 2008.   The feature is fantastic and proves that sometimes the best exposure is absolutely free!

The article mentions several Chamber of Commerce members including;

Mexicali Rosa’s, Maximilians, Fiddleheads Bar and Grill, Coutts and Company Coffee Emporium, Ground Waves, The Hungry Planet, Bistro 54 Italiano, Courtyard Tearoom, good wood oven, Factory Grind, The Sunflower Bake Shop, The Crown, Peter’s Family Restaurant, Perth Restaurant, O’Reilly’s Pub, The Minute Man, Subway and McDonald’s.  Copies of the article are available at the Chamber of Commerce office.

Algonquin College Sponsors National Conference in Perth!
Social Service and Social Work Professors from colleges in Canada will be attending their 6th annual conference from May 13-15, 2008 at Code's Mills.  50 professors from British Columbia, Alberta, Nunavut, Ontario and Quebec will be in attendance.  Keynote speakers include Ben Carniol from Ryerson University and the Honorable James Bartleman.  12 workshops on social justice and anti-oppressive social work practice will be offered.  The guests will be staying at the Code's Mill Inn and they will be shopping at our local stores.  For more information, please contact Lisa Shaw-Verhoek at SSW Program Co-ordinator, Algonquin College Heritage Institute at 613 267-2859, ext. 5603

Nominations are needed for the 2008 Perth Medal

Do you know someone who is always helping others, gives many hours of volunteer time and consistently works for the good of the community?  If you do, then why not nominate them for the 2008 Perth Medal?

The Perth Medal is awarded by the Town of Perth to a person or family who has shown the greatest distinction in a number of endeavours to benefit the community as a whole, with no monetary gain to themselves.  This may be in the fields of community work, fundraising, voluntary work, etc.  Nominees must be residents of Perth or the surrounding area.  The activity being recognized must be totally and singularly related to achievements within the Town of Perth.  No person elected to public office may be nominated, nor may the award be presented posthumously.

Submissions required in writing by June 20th, 2008 at 4:00 p.m.  Submissions will not be considered after this date.

Please send or deliver nominations to:

   Business of the Month

The Membership committee has decided that they would like to have a featured business in each of the Chamber’s monthly newsletters.  A business will be randomly picked each month and highlighted in the newsletter.  This month the Business of the Month is
Clement Printing

Clement Printing

John Clement writes: Having been in the newspaper business for some 47 years, it was a difficult decision to sell The Perth Courier particularly since this, the second oldest community newspaper in Canada, had been part of my family since the 1840's.  However, in October, 2006, the deal was made with the Metroland Group.

I am obviously still around, sticking my nose into everything, but I also have the commercial printing side of the old business, which I now call Clement Printing. We share the office, some personnel and telephone with Courier staff.

Clement Printing has a staff of 7.  Susan is in the front office, Bonnie does the books, Bob manages the printing jobs to make sure things run smoothly, Rose is our graphic artist, Chris and Mike are our pressmen. Rose’s creative skills as a graphic artist are second to none.

We all pride ourselves in quality which makes you, our customer, proud to share your business cards, letter head, forms, posters, flyers, brochures, etc., with your customers throughout your business day. Allow us the opportunity to show you samples of our work and ultimately what we can do for you.

Call 613-267-1100 and ask for Bob or John.  Email us at production@clementprinting.com, or visit our office at 39 Gore Street, East.

It’s All About Local & Healthy Food Choices At Popular Lakeside Restaurant

Looking out over the water, warmed by pleasant pine and log interiors, the greeting of friendly staff and a scrumptious broad based menu, makes dining at Dalhousie Lake Restaurant, a delightful experience.

The restaurant, which is located on county road 8, just outside McDonald's Corners, has long been known for its wide range of great foods.  Public response to last year's addition of certain “healthy choice” and locally grown food items was so overwhelmingly positive, that owners Brian & Lori Forrester have developed a new menu to answer the demand.

The menu now includes extremely high quality Tempeh vegetarian burgers, no fat no cholesterol bison burgers and chopped bison steak.  An organic farm outside Lanark, provides the best mix of greens, cherry and grape tomatoes and the most scrumptiously pleasing assortment of edible flowers to be found anywhere, making salads at Dalhousie Lake Restaurant truly special. High fiber and/or gluten- free pancakes, cereals and breads, as well as fresh fruits and yogurt make yummy breakfast alternatives. Even Fair Trade organic, golden cane sugar and of course only locally produced maple syrup enhance the options.  Denise's special bacon or vegetarian quiches are hand- made using her own farm-fresh, free-range eggs individually baked in her to-die-for pastry and just to “Wrap it Up” there's the whole wheat or gluten-free tortilla goodness, of hearty meal wraps.

Spring Hours  Thurs. & Fri. 4 to 9 pm., Sat. 8 to 9 pm. and Sunday 8 to 8 pm.
